The Department of Zoology was established in 1991, with the introduction of UG programme with pathology and lab technology as the optional subjects. It was the first degree department of the college. The degree course in zoology was started with the sanctioned strength of 24 students. The University of Calicut has since enhanced in the intake to 36 including marginal increase. The first batch passed out in 1994, since the department has always had a record of excellence. The department has put in 28 years of incalculable service to the students belonging to the educationally backward area of Malappuram district. Mr. Abdusalam was the first head of the department. His experience and dedication was highly valuable for the establishment of a well equipped and convenient laboratory, library and museum in the department. Sri. V T Salahudheen (1992 - 2000),  Sri. M Abdusalam (2000-2002), Dr.V K  Ahsaraf Mayan (2002-2010), Smt. PM Khairunnissa (2002-2016), Dr. M Zeenath (2016-2017) was assigned as the HOD of the department. Since 20017 Smt. Krishna Prabha K S is the HOD in charge of the department. In the year 2001-2002, the optional subject was changed to wild life conservation and management.

The department was uplifted to a PG department with the inception of MSc Zoology in the year 2015. Currently there are 3 teaching staff in the aided UG section and 3 teaching staff in the PG stream. Sri CH Usman(2018) . The post of specimen collector was removed by the retirement of Sri. C H Usman. Smt. Sufaina is working as the supporting staff since 2018. The department has consistently maintained high results in the university examinations and has a high demand for admission throughout the years. Department has well developed infrastructure facilities supporting teaching and learning with ICT enabled class rooms and Laboratory. A well arranged museum, sophisticated equipments, activity based class room of PG, reading room and book bank all add glory to the department.
